What is a UPC-A barcode used for?

UPC-A is the 12-digit retail barcode used on products sold in North America. It’s a numeric-only format: 11 digits of data plus one check digit that the scanner uses to catch misreads. A UPC-A number only counts as a valid product identifier once it’s issued to your business by GS1; see what a UPC barcode is for more on that distinction.

How small can a UPC-A be printed before it stops scanning?

Down to 50% magnification (X = 0.165 mm) in our test, one full step smaller than Code 128 or Code 39 held up at. GS1’s own permitted range for retail starts at 80%; below that, our data shows the symbol stays physically scannable but is outside spec for a fixed retail scanner.
