Why does a transparent label make scanning harder?
Because a scanner reads a barcode by measuring contrast between the bars and the background, and a clear label puts whatever’s behind it into that background. Print the same barcode on a clear label over a busy or dark surface, and the scanner may not be able to tell where a bar starts and stops even though the label looks perfectly legible to a person.
When do transparent labels actually work?
When they sit over a plain, light, consistent surface: white or near-white packaging, not glass showing a colored product behind it. If the surface underneath isn’t controlled, a white-backed label is the safer choice regardless of how it looks.
What should you check before printing a batch?
Print one, apply it exactly where it will actually go, and scan it there, not on a plain desk. A test scan on a white sheet of paper tells you the barcode itself is correct; it tells you nothing about whether it will read once applied to the real surface.
